THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS

A Vibrant City with a Seaside Soul

When people think of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is usually the first place that springs to mind. But less then an hour away, there’s a destination that combines cultural grandeur, coastal relaxation, and a uniquely international spirit: The Hague, together with its seaside neighbour Scheveningen.

A City of Elegance and Global Importance

The Hague, or Den Haag as the Dutch call it, is often referred to as the “Royal City by the Sea.” And with good reason—this is where the Dutch royal family resides, where grand palaces are tucked between leafy avenues, and where international diplomacy has found its home for centuries.

It’s not only the seat of the Dutch government but also the international city of peace and justice. The Peace Palace, housing the International Court of Justice, stands as a striking symbol of global cooperation. Even if politics isn’t your passion, the architecture and atmosphere are enough to impress.

Beyond its political importance, The Hague is also a city of culture. The Mauritshuis museum proudly displays Vermeer’s famous Girl with a Pearl Earring alongside masterpieces by Rembrandt and Frans Hals. For something more contemporary, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag surprises visitors with bold modern art and fashion exhibitions. Everywhere you turn, there’s a mix of tradition and innovation.

A Seaside Escape at Scheveningen

And then, just a short tram ride away, you’ll find yourself swapping elegant city streets for the salty sea breeze of Scheveningen. This lively coastal district feels like a world of its own, with its sweeping sandy beach, buzzing promenade, and iconic pier stretching out into the North Sea.

Scheveningen has long been the place where city life and seaside fun come together. In summer, beach clubs set up colourful lounges, perfect for sipping cocktails while the sun sets over the waves. Adventurous visitors can try kite surfing or even take a spin on the giant Ferris wheel perched above the sea. And if you visit in winter, the bracing wind and crashing waves make it an atmospheric spot for a long walk followed by hot chocolate in a cosy café.

The Best of Both Worlds

What makes The Hague and Scheveningen so special is the balance they offer. One moment you’re admiring world-famous art or strolling past royal palaces, and the next you’re barefoot in the sand, watching surfers ride the waves.

The food scene reflects this mix as well. From elegant city restaurants serving modern Dutch cuisine to casual beach bars offering fresh seafood straight from the harbour, there’s something for every taste.
