Academic Tracks

What are the Academic tracks?

The theme of the conference is ‘Changing realities. New opportunities.’ The conference committee invites you to submit a paper or poster presentation within the broad theme of the conference and within the following conference tracks:

1. Digital Realities

This track is concerned with the ways digital technologies are currently (and will be) shaping the ways tourism activities are (or will be) produced and consumed in variegated contexts.

2. Sustainable Realities

In this track we welcome contributions focusing on contemporary practices in the realm of sustainable tourism. For instance, papers addressing issues such as sustainable tourism development, pro-environmental practices, tourism impacts, the role of local knowledge in sustainable development and new modes of governance are welcome.

3. Educational Realities

This track is concerned with the transformative power that tourism and hospitality education holds for generating positive change in tourism praxis and society. For example, papers may address the latest developments in education pedagogies, processes of curriculum development, modalities for evaluating teaching and learning and student career choices.

4. Managerial and New Work Realities

Following the Covid-19 crisis, the need to examine critically work practices is even greater. Among other topics, papers may address both employees and employers’ perspectives on work processes, practices, structures, management styles and interaction in work environments.

5. Practical Realities: The Case Study Track

Tourism and hospitality cases may address professional dilemmas, management failures, best practices and a vast range of critical management issues. Cases studies should be informative and relevant to educators or practitioners.

6. Urban Tourism Realities

In this track, we invite contributors to critically examine or imagine policymaking in city destinations with the view to tackle issues of social justice and the detrimental impacts associated with tourism. Contributions may be about (but are not limited to) mobilities, discourse in urban tourism, urban tourism governance, commodification of cultures and urban regeneration.

7. General Track

We will also invite a general track to allow an area of creativity where related and relevant topics that are difficult to fit in the named tracks can be presented.
